ESSLLI32 in 2021

The 32nd edition of ESSLLI, is currently scheduled to take place from  2 through 13 August 2021.

This year, the ESSLLI summer school surely will take place. Last year, we were forced to postpone the summer school because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we did not think that a purely on-line event would be suited for ESSLLI.

It is at this moment absolutely not clear yet that ESSLLI32 can really be held in person at the Utrecht University campus. At the time of writing (January 2021), the Netherlands is in a lockdown until February 9, 2021, and it is not unlikely that restrictions will be tightened even further soon. The so-called `British variant’ is creating a chaos in the UK (esp. London) and in Ireland, and the experts here expect a similar situation in the Netherlands if this variant cannot be kept in control.

ESSLLI32 is an international event. Therefore not only the situation in the Netherlands is relevant, but also the situation in the countries of residence of the lecturers, workshop organisers, participating students, key note speakers, committee members,  and other ESSLLI32 participants: it should be possible for them to travel to the Netherlands safely and with not too many restrictions.

We are currently in the process of investigating with the ESSLLI Standing Committee, the Programme Committee, and the lecturers and workshop organisers which forms ESSLLI32 could take. We  consider a fully virtual variant of ESSLLI the least preferred option, because face-to-face presence is essential for teaching, networking, exchanging of ideas, and informal gathering in the social events at ESSLLI. However, we must be prepared for the worst case, and we have to accept that not all events can be done face-to-face any more. In the worst case scenario,  the event will be held fully on-line.

We are exploring options for such an online version of ESSLLI. However, we also investigate scenarios in which ESSLLI would be a hybrid event (partially in-person in Utrecht, partially online). Of course, health and well-being of the ESSLLI participants is our top priority. Therefore we will always follow the rules and guidelines issued by the Netherlands government and of Utrecht University, and be cautious in any of our decisions.

We target to take decisions on the format of ESSLLI32 by early March 2021 and will then also open registration.

We would like to express our gratitude again to the organising committee and the programme committee of the 33rd ESSLLI which was originally planned for 2021 (Galway, Ireland) for their flexibility to shift the 33rd ESSLLI to 2022.

Stay healthy and strong! I look forward to welcoming you at the 32nd ESSLLI in Utrecht in 2021, hopefully in person but at least virtually!

Jan Odijk, Chair ESSLLI2020 Organising Committee On behalf of the ESSLLI2020 Standing Committee, Programme Committee and Organising Committee.
